Greetings,

You asked about a 16th-century Scottish Gaelic patronymic based on the
name "Angus."

<Angus> is a Scots form of the Scottish Gaelic name <Aonghus>. (1) The most
common Gaelic form of a patronymic based on <Aonghus> is <mac Aonghuis>. (2)

The most common modern Scots form of this name is <MacInnes>, although
<MacAngus> also exists. We found period spellings for both forms:

<Makangus> 1492
<McKinwas> 1535
<M'Kinshe> 1628 (2)

<McKynes> 1514
<M'Kynnes> 1548
<M'Aneiss> 1574
<Mc Inoss> 158
<Mcynwiss> 1525 (3)

Arval Benicoeur and Talan Gwynek contributed to this letter.

We hope this has been helpful, and that we can continue to assist you.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
