The most common rental period length is three months. In an attempt to accommodate the number of late returns, many institutions have begun to extend the initial rental period to four, five, or six months, and to charge an proportionately larger amount.
Late fees were usually assigned as an extension of the original period fee. For instance, if an institution charged $75.00 for three months, the late fee per month would be $25.00. Other institutions would charge the full $75.00 for each late month. These fees normally were calculated so that the late fees were far preferable to replacement (note the $750.00 maximum replacement fee).
Most institutions equated a damaged transparency with a lost transparency, and charged similar amounts for both.
