  DON'T PANIC!

This is one hell of a page, I give it *three* thumbs up.-- FRIERS@CAPITAL.NET

In the beginning, Douglas Adams wrote a radio script for "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". This made a lot of people angry, and has been widely regarded as a bad move, especially after Inland Revenue decided he wasn't paying them enough money. Links connected with Douglas Adams and his oeuvre have proliferated through the net. Some of the prominent sites are:

Douglas Adams also has a net address, but I will not give it, as he gets quite annoyed by mail from people saying "You aren't the real Douglas Adams, are you?" He got a lot of this after trying to contribute to discussion of the Aquatic Ape Theory. If you really need to get in touch with him, write to askdna@tdv.com.

Various strange people on the system have been trying to put together a real (?) Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy from contributions. There is a WWW interface, while new contributions are posted to alt.galactic-guide. Or are supposed to be. If you are still confused, read the FAQ for the Project. More information is found on the Research Vessel Leiden site. Or you can check the official Project Archive. If after this you still want to have anything to do with this endeavour, like contributing something, be sure to read the Article Writing Guide.

The Deep Thought site explores the cosmic implications of 42. Life, the Universe and Everything is an essay on DNA and theology.

We can not ignore the Pan Galactic Gargleblaster. The author advises us that mixing one under Earth atmospheric conditions is impossible, but people keep trying substitute versions.

Then there are games. Mr. Adams was behind adventure games for the late, great Infocom, starting with (oddly enough) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. If you have these, and you are unscrupulous or hopelessly lost (as in the infamous Babel fish sequence), you can access a complete Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Walkthrough, or a walkthrough to Bureaucracy, inspired by DNA's attempts to get his bank to acknowledge a change of address. There are other Bureaucracy and Hitchhiker's solutions. For those less wimpy, there are the original InvisiClues Hitchhiker's hints and Bureaucracy hints. Users of the Universal Hint System program may also consult the Hitchhiker's UHS file, or the Bureaucracy UHS file.

You may also find the briefings for the Hitchhiker Role-Playing Pub Crawl, and the Dirk Gently Role-Playing Pub Crawl. The Oxford Society has also perpetrated other pub crawls which have nothing to do with Douglas Adams. Do not ask me why.

There are also rumors of a stage production of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, which has set up (of course) a virtual office on the Web.

Elsewhere, Glyn has perpetrated The Tempest: A Hitchhiker Remix.

These days Mr. Adams is busy with the complex of projects called The Digital Village. One thing to come forth from this is the creation of yet another game, Starship Titanic. The companion book is "Douglas Adams' Starship Titantic" by Terry Jones, as the publisher insisted that the book had to be issued at EXACTLY THE SAME TIME as the game, or it would be COMPLETELY UNMARKETABLE, and Douglas had no time to write a novel as well. But when the book appeared, the release of the game was still months ahead. Since nobody seemed to be worrying any longer about whether it was marketable or not, you can also use the Web to follow the tour the terrible two took in the middle hiatus. Here are some pictures from their assault on New York.
