Using Eudora's XTND XMIT option to send mail

Since the Post Office Protocol (POP3) was designed to handle the retrieval of email, it includes username and password authentication. This lets us validate users, so we can send your email to you instead of someone else's.

There's also a version of POP3 that lets you log in to send mail as well. If you're on a non-Panix Internet link, are using Eudora, and want to send mail via Panix's mailservers, it's possible to use the "XTND XMIT" command for that purpose.

Lately, most email software has standardized on the "SMTP Auth" login method for sending mail instead. (Even Eudora has this capability, in its newer versions.) If you have Eudora 5 or later (or can get it), we very much recommend doing that.

Panix continues to make XTND XMIT available for our subscribers who use older versions of Eudora, in settings where upgrading to the latest version would be impractical. Please keep in mind that we expect to phase this out eventually, however.
Setting up Eudora for POP's "XTND XMIT":
["XTND XMIT" is named for the beginning of the contents of the conversation between your PC and the mailserver when you send mail using POP3. It's a non-standard technique that is supported by some software, including Eudora and certain Panix mailservers.

Windows
Eudora reads a file when first starting up that tells it what settings to use. Most of these were set to your specifications through the menu script ("getting started") when you first fired up Eudora.

Because "XTND XMIT" is an add-on, it has to be manually edited into the file.

To do this you'll have to find, then edit, the "eudora.ini" file.
You _may_ also have to make some changes in the "username" and "hosts" settings. (see the
Potential Problems section.

  1. Click the "start" button in the lower left corner of your Windows screen, and then, from the pop up menu:
  2. Choose "find", then "files and folders"
  3. Check the box to "include subfolders"
  4. Type in "eudora.ini"
then, a few seconds later, you should see that file listed.
  5. 'Double click' the mouse cursor on "eudora.ini"
  6. Use the editing keys to move the cursor through the file until you find the section called "[Settings]" (no quotes)
  7. Manually type in a new line as follows:
    UsePOPSend=1
(NOTE: be careful about spaces and cases)
  8. Close it all up by clicking onto
    file-> save ->exit
The next time you start Eudora it should ask you for your password and then start sending e-mail out through the POP server.

Mac Eudora
Here's how to change Mac Eudora's settings to support XTND XMIT:
  1. Find the Eudora folder (that's the folder, not the program) and open it.
  2. Look for another folder inside it called "extra plugins" and open it.
(If you don't see it there, try looking for a folder called "extra" that contains another folder called "plugins".)
  3. Now look for the file named "esoteric settings", possibly with a number after the name.
  4. Drag the "esoteric settings" file into the "Eudora Stuff" folder. You can find the "Eudora Stuff" folder inside the main Eudora folder.
(If you're unclear on where things are, refer to the "Read Me (Plug-ins)" file in the "Extra Plugins" folder. It explains in detail where everything goes.)
  5. Click on and start the Eudora program, and go down through the "special" menu until you find "settings".
  6. Scroll down the list in the left-hand pane of the settings window until you see the new choice "ports and protocols". Click on it.
  7. Click on the checkbox named "use XTND XMIT".
  8. Close it all up.
The next time you start Eudora it should ask you for your password and then start sending e-mail out through the POP server.

Potential Problems: Changing Hosts and Usernames
Since the POP3 server is authenticating your login based on your Panix username and password, you have to use your actual Panix account name.

Note that this MAY be different from your e-mail address.

So if you're having trouble sending e-mail out make sure to check that the username you've given Eudora is the correct one.

To verify and change:
  1. Go to the "special" menu in the menu bar.
  2. Choose "settings".
  3. Scroll down to "getting started".
  4. Verify that the "username" field is correct.
This should have just your username, not your email address.
For example, if your username is "abcdefghijkl" then the username field should be "abcdefghijkl" without any "@panix.com".
  5. Since you're using the POP server to send out e-mail, you should make sure that the "smtp server" is left blank.
(Most versions of Eudora are smart enough to get around this, but it's better to be safe).
