Since the Post Office Protocol (POP3) was designed to handle the retrieval of email, it includes username and password authentication. This lets us validate users, so we can send your email to you instead of someone else's.
There's also a version of POP3 that lets you log in to send mail as well. If you're on a non-Panix Internet link, are using Eudora, and want to send mail via Panix's mailservers, it's possible to use the "XTND XMIT" command for that purpose.
Lately, most email software has standardized on the "SMTP Auth" login method for sending mail instead. (Even Eudora has this capability, in its newer versions.) If you have Eudora 5 or later (or can get it), we very much recommend doing that.
Panix continues to make XTND XMIT available for our subscribers who use older versions of Eudora, in settings where upgrading to the latest version would be impractical. Please keep in mind that we expect to phase this out eventually, however.
Because "XTND XMIT" is an add-on, it has to be manually edited into the file.
To do this you'll have to find, then edit, the "eudora.ini" file.
You _may_ also have to make some changes in the
"username" and "hosts" settings.
(see the Potential Problems section.
Note that this MAY be different from your e-mail address.
So if you're having trouble sending e-mail out make
sure to check that the username you've given Eudora
is the correct one.

(If you don't see it there, try looking for a folder
called "extra" that contains another folder called
"plugins".)
(If you're unclear on where things are, refer to
the "Read Me (Plug-ins)" file in the "Extra Plugins"
folder. It explains in detail where everything goes.)
This should
have just your username, not your email address.
For example,
if your username is "abcdefghijkl" then the username
field should be "abcdefghijkl" without any "@panix.com".
(Most versions of
Eudora are smart enough to get around this, but it's
better to be safe).
