Mandatory 11-digit Dialing Begins 1-Feb-2003

On February 1st, 2003, Verizon will begin requiring 11-digit dialing for all New York City area codes (212, 718, 917, 646, 347). This means that you'll no longer be allowed to dial a 7-digit number, even if you're dialing a 212 number from 212. You'll have to dial "1 + area-code + the number" for every phone call you make, including fax and modem calls.

If you're like most of us, your modem software is probably set up for 7-digit dialing. You will need to change it right now if you want your dial-up connection to Panix to keep working after January 31. (11-digit dialing is already allowed, so you can switch right away with no trouble.)

Here are some guides to changing your computer to use 11-digit dialing:

Of course, if you prefer not to adjust your Dialing Properties or area code rules, you can just type all 11 digits into the phone number field ("1-212-812-9201" for example) if you want.

For more information about the dialing rules change, see Verizon's FAQ on the subject. If you have any questions for Panix about how this affects your account, just give us a call at 212-741-4400, option 4.
