Using Newer Mac (G3, G4, iMac, iBook) Internal Modems with Panix

Apple's Software Updates Website: http://asu.info.apple.com/

These instructions are for newer Macintosh computers (blue/white G3, Powerbook G3, all iMac, all iBook, all G4 models) with the built-in internal modem provided by Apple.
PLEASE NOTE: If you're logging in okay but getting disconnected within a few minutes every time you call in, you may have "line prompting" turned on. Look in the "Options" of your PPP or Remote Access control panel, click on the 'Connection' index tab, and turn off "Prompt to maintain connection".

If you're using FreePPP, this setting is called "Check line every ___ seconds", and is located in the 'General' tab.

If you're having trouble connecting to Panix from your Mac, please also verify that your TCP/IP and Remote Access (PPP) settings are correct before continuing. Help for these control panels can be found here:
Once you've made sure that your settings are all correct, the next step is to update and troubleshoot the modem. Here's some help for that task.

(This page is for the built-in internal modem only. If you're using an external modem or a "PC Card" modem, take the modem out and note the brand name, then check the Modem Help Index for instructions on that brand.)

Apple makes available two different updaters at its website: one for the new G3s and G4s (including all iMacs, blue-and-white G3 towers, all iBooks and all G4 models), and another for older G3 "Beige" Macs. Please make sure you install the correct update.

Apple also has "modem scripts" available to let you use the internal iMac modem at regular V.34 (28.8K to 33.6K) speeds, if your phone line quality prohibits 56K communications.

This script can be reached from Apple's web site, at http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11128/.
