USING PANIX WITH OT-PPP OR APPLE REMOTE ACCESS

(the "PPP" or "Remote Access" control panel, and "Modem")

Macintosh Systems 7.6 and newer come with a full implementation of Open Transport, including a new PPP dialer. This dialer is very nice, and we recommend it highly for general use.

However, there are a few things you need to do before you can dial Panix with it. If you run into snags, this document will go through the correct setup.

(If you follow these instructions but continue to have trouble, you should check your TCP/IP control panel settings too.)

STEP 1. The "Modem" Control Panel

First thing you need to do is go to the Modem control panel, and verify that you're on the right port and have the right modem listed. If your modem is not on the list, check with your hardware manufacturer. Ask them for an "OT-PPP modem script" or for an equivalent model you can set it to.

STEP 2. The "PPP" Control Panel

Now go to the PPP control panel.

(In System 8.5 and the iMac, this is in the "Apple Remote Access" control panel; open it instead and verify that you have it set to PPP.)

2a. The Main Dialog

At the top of the dialog, you should see "Connect via: Modem". This means that your "Modem" control panel is installed and active.

The "Connection" area should have 'Registered User' selected, with your Panix username and password in the proper fields. Unless you're the only one with access to your computer, you should leave "Save password" unchecked.

The proper Panix modem number should be in the "Number" blank.

2b. Now click the 'Options' button:

The "Redialing" index-tab can be modified to your taste.

In the "Connection" index-tab, just make sure "Disconnect if idle..." and "Prompt every..." aren't checked. Everything else can be set wherever you prefer.

In the "Protocol" index-tab, do the following:

  • "Allow error correction and compression in modem" should be checked.
  • "Use TCP header compression" should likewise be checked.
  • "Connect to a command-line host:" should not be checked.

Close the window, and restart your Mac.

STEP 3. Connecting to Panix

To connect, just go to the "PPP" control panel and click "Connect". OT-PPP should dial and log in automatically, leaving you free to use your Internet applications.

(If you checked "Allow applications to open connection", you can connect to Panix simply by opening one of your Internet apps.)

When you're finished using the Internet connection, just click "Disconnect" (or close your Internet applications) and your modem should hang up. The modem will also hang up automatically if you shut down your Mac.

That's all!
