WINDOWS 2000 DIAL-UP CONNECTIONS:
Setting Up Windows 2000 To Connect To Panix
- Introduction: Where to find the dial-up networking
setup?
- In Win2K, you won't find a "Dialup Networking" icon in the "My
Computer" area. They've moved all this stuff into the Control
Panel now.
Go to the Control Panel, and open up "Network and Dial-up
Connections" there.
You'll see a "Make New Connection" icon, which now lets you create
all kinds of connections in addition to dialup ones (Ethernet,
VPN, you name it).
- But enough about the new features of Win2K. On to the instructions.
- STEP 1. Creating a new dial-up connection
- From the "Network and Dial-up Connections" window, click
"Make new connection". This will pop up a connection wizard.
Click 'Next' to begin, and then choose your connection
type. For a standard Internet modem connection, choose "Dial-up
to the Internet". Click 'Next'
The next screen asks you about your account. Since you already
have a Panix account, select "I want to set up my Internet
connection manually". Click 'Next'.
Now it'll ask how you intend to connect. Choose "I connect
through a phone line and a modem", and click 'Next'.
Now enter the modem number for Panix, and click 'Next'.
Now enter your Panix username and password. Click 'Next'.
Name the connection (call it Panix if you can't think of a clever
name). Click 'Next' one more time.
The next screen asks if you want to set up a mail account. If you
already have a mail account configured, or if you don't want to use
Outlook for email, choose 'No'.
(if you choose 'Yes' here, skip down to section 2 now.)
If you choose 'No', just click 'Next' again and you'll see the
final screen. Click 'Finish' to dial your connection right away.
- STEP 2. Setting up a mail account in Outlook
- When you select 'Yes' and click 'Next' to set up a mail account,
the wizard will ask you to type a "Display Name". This should be
your real name, or your preferred nickname, or something like it.
Type it in, and click 'Next'.
The next screen will ask for your "E-mail address". Type your
Panix email address, and click 'Next'.
The next screen will ask about your mail servers. First, you need
to select your incoming mail server type. Usually, you should
leave it set to "My incoming mail server is a 'POP3' server".
(If you're interested in using IMAP for greater mail
portability, ask about our IMAP beta-testing program by sending
email to staff@panix.com.)
In the "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server:" field, type:
mail.panix.com
(If you're using IMAP or have an "access.net" or corporate mailbox
account, you may have been given a different server name for
incoming mail. If so, use that instead.)
In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:" field, type:
mail.panix.com
Now click 'Next'.
The next screen asks for your mail account logon info. In the
"Account Name:" field, type your Panix username (the part before
the "@panix.com" or "@access.net").
Type your Panix password in the "Password:" field. If you're the
only one who uses your computer, it's probably safe to leave
"Remember password" checked; otherwise, you probably shouldn't
let the computer remember it.
Leave "Use Secure Password Authentication" blank. Click 'Next'.
Now you're finished setting up the mail account for Outlook
Express. The next screen is the final screen.
If you want to dial your connection and try it out right away,
make sure there's a check in the box and click 'Finish'.
Otherwise, take the checkmark out of the box before clicking
'Finish'.
- STEP 3. Tricks for added dial-up stability
- Your dial-up session shouldn't need any extra setup. However,
line conditions can make a modem connection unstable, and there
are a few things you can do to increase stability.
- Go back to the "Network and Dial-up
Connections" window. Right-click on your dial-up icon and
choose 'Properties'.
The 'General', 'Options', and 'Security' tabs can be left
alone, for the most part. In the 'Networking' tab, however,
the 'Settings' button lets you change a couple of helpful
things:
Click 'Settings' from within the 'Networking' tab. You'll
see 3 checkboxes. To improve stability, turn off the
"software compression", and turn off "negotiate multi-link
for single-link connections".
- STEP 4. Troubleshooting
- If you've set up your Internet connection properly and your
browser still won't go anywhere, check these settings:
- The "Internet Options" control panel, in
the 'Connections' tab. Tell it to "Always dial my default
connection" and set your Panix connection to be the
default.
