Panix recovers from domain name hijack

Current Status

Tue Jan 18 17:50:09 EST 2005

We believe that the service disruption caused by the hijack is over as of Monday Jan 17 6:15 PM US-EST. If you used the panix.net domain to workaround the problem, we ask that you return to using panix.com.

We've published a short FAQ for our customers with questions regarding the hijack.
Please see: http://www.panix.com/hijack-faq.html

Panix's main domain name, panix.com, was temporarily hijacked over the weekend (January 15-16) by parties unknown. This caused mail to panix.com addresses to bounce and made it difficult to reach Panix's servers. We recovered our domain Sunday evening US-EST, but the service disruption continued for some areas of the Internet until Monday night, when the corrupted information inserted by the hijackers should have expired and replaced with the correct panix.com zone data. If you used the panix.net domain to workaround the problem, we ask that you return to using panix.com.

The hijack occured because an Australian registrar, MelbourneIT, failed to do proper confirmation of a fraudulent domain transfer request they received. The normal process, which includes notifications to the original registrar and the current domain holder, did not occur.

As the hijacking occurred over a weekend, we had great trouble reaching responsible parties at the other companies involved. The domain was not returned to us until the beginning of the business day in Australia on Monday. None of the companies involved had support numbers that were available over the weekend, or even emergency contact numbers.

This hijacking involved multiple felonies here and abroad. Many members of law enforcement agencies in the US and at least three other countries have already been involved, and we hope that the perpetrator(s) will be caught.
