A Book Log

May 31, 2006

As the kids these days say, OMG. I have, like, this totally freakin’ huge backlog o’ books, and I’m all intimidated by it. OMG indeed. So, fuck it, let me just get to a partial round-up of graphic novels.

Dear Amazon.com recommendations engine,

Yes, I admit that I bought Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead vols. 1-4, a series of zombie-themed graphic novels. But no, that doesn’t mean that I am a lover of zombie fiction. In fact, I don’t like zombies at all; I find them tedious and uninteresting. The thing is, though, these aren’t zombie novels in the usual horror genre sense — they’re apocalypse books where zombies happen to be the particular vector of the apocalypse. And as apocalypse books go, they’re pretty good — not genre-transcendingly great, but definitely worth reading for people who like apocalypse-themed comics.

Anyway, though, knock it off with the zombie recommendations. Thanks.

Sincerely, Me

Joanna Russ’ We Who Are About To... is a better concept than a book. Conceptually, it’s very interesting: A group of people are marooned on an alien planet, and start following the standard SF “survive and colonize” plotline... but can’t make it and all die.

But the actual experience of reading it is frustrating. Reading a book about doomed protagonists is obviously not entirely fun, but it’s made less fun by the narrator being a horribly unpleasant (and arguably evil) person who descends into madness for the last quarter of the book.

This is probably an “important” book in some sense, but I can’t say I’d recommend reading it.
