Brin and Zelazny are/were experts at details, no question, but I worry they forget they're using a plot. I don't mind in the least, though. I loved the way Zelazny pulled stuff out of his ass. He always took the time to at least set it up before getting to the 'big bang'. Okay, maybe Brin doesn't have the same gift for prose as Zelazny (actually, I can only think of two or three who come close), but he certainly knows how to build his worlds and characters. Just wish he'd thought a bit harder on some of his resolutions.
