Is tracing bullets back to their purchaser the main way murders are solved these days?

From what I've been given to understand, it's often useful...but generally the bullets are traced back to the gun that fired them via analysis of rifling marks. So unless these were magically unmarkable bullets, I don't really see how they could avoid being connected to what is (presumably) a relatively easily traceable weapon.

At any rate, lame.
