It's not the copy/absorb thing that struck me as particularly like Kiln People, it's the combination of that with a noirish detective thing. I rather suspect that Madrox, in earlier incarnations, was just a straight-forward super-powered guy ("Every punch you land just makes me stronger! You can't hope to defeat THE MULTIPLE MAN!").
