I had the same reaction... that this resembles Star King more than, say, Eyes of the Overworld. This one, perhaps more than some of the other Archonate universe books, is very much a Vance homage. He even mentions 'hussade', and 'Amboy,' both of which will be familiar to died in the wool Vancians. (Like me).
