Panix Web FAQ: 1.1. Personal Web Pages

How do I set up my website?
From a unix prompt on one of the Panix userhosts, enter the command "charlotte" and answer "y" when prompted by the system. This will create a directory on the webhosts, and a symbolic link in your home directory called "public_html". public_html will function as if it were an actual directory from your point of view, and will be where you will upload your files.
How do I upload my files?
We recommend using FTP to do this; most Web design software can publish using FTP, or you can download a pure FTP program like SmartFTP (Windows) or Fetch (Mac) for free. Use either an FTP client, or an FTP capable site design client, to connect to shell.panix.com using your Panix username and password; once you are connected, locate the public_html directory, and put your site files in that directory. Remember, your main page should be called "index.html" or "index.htm"! If you don't use an "index" page, and if the directory is world readable, visitors will see a listing of files in that directory; if it's not readable they won't have permission to see anything.
Can I use Frontpage?

Frontpage is not compatible with the Apache web server software environment. Furthermore, Microsoft discontinued support for Frontpage in 2006. Therefore, the answer is an unqualified, irreversible "No."

Can I have a domain name?
By default, the URL for your personal website is "http://www.panix.com/~[your username]". You may instead wish to use your own domain name. Adding a domain name to a personal website requires the addition of the Cheap-Web service.
