Exit Art and AAWW join forces in an evening of readings with Ameena Meer (Bombay Talkie), Thaddeus Rutkowski (Roughhouse) and John Yau (My Symptoms) in the current exhibition featuring New York artists.

Black Lightning presents Indran Amirthanayagam, poet and diplomat for a reading and live interview with Eileen Tabios. Q&A with audience about poetry and diplomacy follows.

Mei-mei Berssenbrugge Book Party

Winner of the 1997 Asian American Literary Award for Poetry, Mei-mei Berssenbrugge reads and celebrates the release of her newest poetry collection Four Year Old Girl.

Border Raids & Treaties of the Heart

AAWW collaborates with PEN American and NYU Africana Studies for a reading with Junot Diaz (Drown), Cornelius Eady (Autobiography of a Jukebox) and Kimiko Hahn (The Unbearable Heart). Made possible by the Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Fund.

The First Annual Asian American Literary Awards
Monday, November 16, 8:00pm

Hosted by David Henry Hwang and Jessica Hagedorn, AAWW honors excellence in Asian American literature. Readings from 1997 recipients Mei-mei Berssenbrugge and Lois-Ann Yamanaka. Additional readings by 1998 published authors Lawrence Chua, Indira Ganesan and Timothy Liu.

Children's Book Workshop - Sheila Hamanaka
Wednesdays, Sept. 23-Nov. 11, 7:00pm
Writing and/or Illustrating for Children: a holistic approach to the picture book, both fiction and nonfiction. The goal of the course is to create a manuscript and/or „dummy‰ suitable for submission to a publisher. Author of The Journey, Sheila Hamanaka won the American Book Award in 1992. No requirements or experience necessary.

Advanced Poetry Workshop - Timothy Liu

Award-winning author of Vox Angelica and Say Goodnight instructs an advanced poetry workshop focusing on lyric poetry in America at century's end. CreateNow Youth Writing Program

Read, create and publish Asian American literature in a supportive community of emerging writers. No experience necessary. High School students only.
