Ocassionally, I like to indulge in idle speculation about what future
books about Dragaera will contain. Some of that speculation is organized
here. I claim no intellectual rights to any of these thoughts and have no
intention of suing Brust if he writes a book that bears some similarity to
something suggested here. Indeed, I would be more honored than otherwise,
and would never suggest that my weekend's effort is anything like what it
takes him to write an entire novel.

Some people gave obseved that there is a tendency for Vlad to act like
a member of the house that a book is named after.

Brust has said in an interview:

By Tasha Robinson (8/2001)
Are you ultimately shooting for 18 Vlad books, to cover the 17
Dragaeran houses plus Taltos?
Brust: Nineteen. The plan, when I figured out I was doing a series, was
17--one for each house, and the first one, called Taltos, and the last
one, called The Last Contract. Or I'll die first, or I'll stop having
fun writing them. If I ever reach the point where I no longer enjoy
writing them, and a publisher waves a whole bunch of money under my nose,
then we will have a test of Steve's character.

Lyorn represent tradition. Possibly a story involving Noish-pa? Or
perhaps a Lyorn historian interviewing Sethra Lavode about the beginning
of the Empire?

Tiassa represent catalyst and inspiration. One would be extremely
disappointed if a book named _Tiassa_ didn't have Vlad interacting with an
older (but hardly retired) Khaavren!

Hawk represents curiosity. Might involve Daymar, obviously.

Tsalmoth represent unpredictability and tenacity. Well, that's not a
bad description of Vlad, but doesn't make any obvious story points.

Vallista are destruction and rebuilding. Maybe this is the book in
which Vlad rebuilds some aspect of his life. Getting the Jhereg to stop
hunting him and/or getting back together with Cawti. Perhaps Kragar's
death (referred to in ADOP) is entailed somehow.
I once speculated that this book would involve Vlad taking down the
Cycle itself, but as Norathar gracefully takes the Orb sometime after 309,
this now seems unlikely.

Iorich represent justice and retribution. Obviously, this would involve
Vlad getting involved with The Law in some manner. Possibly telling us
about one of the times he was imprisoned that we haven't heard much about.

Chreotha represent traps. Seems likely to involve the Jhereg trying to
catch Vlad in the post-_Phoenix_ period. Or possibly the elaborate trap
that Vlad very briefly describes in Ja 264-265, which involves at
least one (faux) Chreotha.

The Last Contract. Vlad now has a Great Weapon named Godslayer. You
figure he's got to use it for that some day...

Also, Vlad has made frequent references to past adventures we haven't seen
yet. Some of them have to have occured early in his career (mostly in 241
and 242 PI), others during the post-_Phoenix_ period. I've listed all the
ones I could find below, as well as speculating as to the title of the
book they might appear in.

Vlad killed as a warning, revivified by Sethra Lavode (J 39-40). Vlad
has "never bothered the guy since". Iorich, perhaps?

"Cawti holding a knife to Morollan's throat and explaining how it was
going to be, while I sat paralyzed and helpless" (Tk 13). No obvious
connection. Tsalmoth, maybe?

Vlad learns "you can never go home" (Tk 99). [This is listed as one of
the effects of the Battle of Baritt's Tomb, but doesn't seem to apply to
anything that happens in _Dragon_.] Vlad and Loiosh go East (O 201).
No obvious connection. Tsalmoth, maybe Lyorn? Or maybe
_Fenario_, since we're leaving the land of Faerie...

Vlad gets in "a little trouble with the Empire" once (J 20). Might be
referring to the Tagichatn matter in 240 PI, but more likely refers to the
untold tale immediately below. Iorich?
Vlad is incarcerated for "a few weeks" "as part of the affair that
gained me my exalted position in the Jhereg and had first brought my
friend Aliera to the attention of the Empress" (P 54).

Vlad has been in prison once more that we don't know about (P 104,
152-153). Iorich?

Vlad "had lain helpless while Morrolan battled a demon that had taken
his own sword from him" (P 111). Hawk, perhaps? (on the "investigating
things man was Not Meant To Know lines...)
Verra considers Morollan's window an Imperial Secret (ADOP, p24). One
wonders at the context in which *this* little tidbit became known to
Vlad... Also Hawk, for similar reasons.

Vlad "parlayed with spirits from my ancestral home for the release of
the Necromancer's soul" (P 111). ???

Vlad "battled with my own likeness" (P 111). ?

"the time I spent half a day under a pile of refuse because it was the
only place to hide" (O 24). Tsalmoth?

"the time I took a job selling fish in the market" (O 24). "Once I ended
up impersonating a corporal in the Imperial Guard and had to arrest
someone for creating a disturbance in a public place" (O 24). ?

Vlad loses his left pinky in a fight (A 6, 30, 45). Vlad meets a
philosopher, then kills her (A 38-39). Chreotha?

Vlad is held captive somewhere (not by the Empire), involving "far too
much potato soup" (Is 90). Chreotha?

Vlad sees Morrolan fight a nasty duel with Vrudric e'Lanya in Castle
Black (Is 137). ???

Vlad has an unpleasant run-in with someone who (unexpectedly) *can*
jump an eleven-foot crevasse (Is 120). ?

Finally, there is the infamous short story "A Dream of Passion". We can
infer many things from it, most of which are referred to at least
obliquely above, and it may form a chapter of a book of its own some day.
I'll wildly guess Hawk, but there isn't much obvious indication.
