Directions to Melville Keep (12 Melville Avenue, Dorchester) By Car: >From the North or West: Take your best route to I-93 southbound. Take I-93 to Exit 15 (JFK Library, Columbia Road). Turn right at the bottom of the ramp, then turn left at the first traffic signal, Dorchester Avenue. Stay on Dorchester for 1.8 miles. At about 1.5 miles, you will go under a railway bridge at the Field's Corner T station; in a couple more blocks you'll pass a large park on your right, then a Tedeschi's market on your left. Turn right on Melville, which is the next traffic signal. (The landmark here is Mohawk insurance company on the far left with a big Indian Head sign, and Gibbs gas station on the far right.) Proceed from *. >From the South: Take your best route to I-93 northbound. Take I-93 to Exit 13. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp, go under the freeway, then turn right immediately. At the first traffic signal, turn left and immediately get into the right lane. Keep to the right: in about 200 yards this will take you off the main road onto a little access road (it looks like you're heading into a parking lot). This access road passes a Chinese restaurant with a large sign out front; turn right immediately after the restaurant. [If you end up actually in the big grocery store parking lot, you've gone too far, so turn around.] Stay on this somewhat winding street until it _ends_ (approx. 0.4 miles, and passing underneath a T-overpass). Take a right (Adams), then immediately take your first left (Dix). Stay on Dix street until it ends, then take a right (Dorchester) then immediately your first left. You are now on Melville Avenue; continue from * >From the East: Moor your boat next to the Tea Party Ship and walk to South Station. Follow from "By T" below. * Go up Melville almost to the end. The street slopes slightly uphill almost its entire length; 12 Melville is on the right about 100 feet before the hill crests. If you pass a very large Victorian house that has a sign out front reading 'Salvation Army', fronted by a white-painted wrought-iron fence, you've gone too far: Ours is the house just before that one. There is a large sign reading "12" in the front door. By T: Take the Ashmont branch of the Red Line (for those who live north of Boston and never take the T past South Station: take a Red Line train that says "Ashmont" on the signs; do not take one that says "Braintree". Been there, done that.). Get off the train at Shawmut and find your way to the surface: there is only one exit. Once on the surface, go around behind the station, then follow the pedestrian through-way across Mather Street and on to Melville Ave. Turn left onto Melville, then follow the directions from *. ----XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX----XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX----XXXX ------------------------------------------------------XXXX ---------------------------Allston St.----------------XXXX ------------------------------------------------------XXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX---XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX----XXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX---XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX----XXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX---XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX----XXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX---XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX----XXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX---XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX----XXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX---XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX----XXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-M-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-M--XXXX ----TTTTTTTT--=================-a-================-e--XXXX ----ExitTTTT--=pedestrian way==-t-================-l--XXXX ----TTTTTTTT--=================-h-================-v--XXXX --------------XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-e-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-i--XXXX -Clementine---XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-r-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-l--XXXX XXXXXXXXXXX-D-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX- -XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-l--XXXX XXXXXXXXXXX-a-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-S-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-e--XXXX XXXXXXXXXXX-y-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-t-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX- --XXXX XXXXXXXXXXX-t-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-r-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-A--XXXX XXXXXXXXXXX-o-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-e-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-v--XXXX XXXXXXXXXXX-n-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-e-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-e--XXXX ------------------Nixon St.-----t-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-.--XXXX ----------------------------------XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX----XXXX If Shawmut Station is closed, and you take a shuttle bus (#18?) instead (probably from JFK): When the driver lets you off "at Shawmut Station", you will in fact be on Dorchester Avenue, and several blocks away from the actual station. What you need to do now is find Melville Avenue. It's probably one or two blocks back the way you came. Once on Melville, follow the directions from * above.
