The Smell of Rain

This morning as I emerged from my apartment all bleary eyed, I was greeted with the wonderful smell of rain.

It's such a welcome scent here in the desert. Wafts of it combine with sage and other desert flora. It wakes us up and enlivens us, just as it does the cacti. Smells fresh...alive...cooling...

Heard on the radio this morning that it won't even reach 90 today, that parts of the valley had been soaked...but that was abstract. Reality hit as soon as I opened the door and could breathe in the rainy air.

It was bright and sunny, but the air and the puddles were evidence. Now if only those freeway drivers would ever learn how to drive in this stuff!
