Fritas (Cuban Hamburgers)

Recipe from: copyright
Servings: 6

12 ounces lean ground beef
8 ounces ground pork
½ cup bottled Thousand Island dressing
3 tablespoons finely chopped onion
½ teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic
12 slices, ½ inch size, Cuban bread
2 tablespoons melted butter
½ teaspoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro
1 12 ounce can potato sticks

Mix the ground beef and pork thoroughly.

Use a food processor or blender to purée the Thousand Island dressing with the onion, cumin and garlic. Pour about half into the meat mixture. Mix thoroughly and shape into individual patties. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate at least 2 hours. Refrigerate remaining sauce.

To serve, grill the patties well. Brush the bread slices with the melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder. Grill lightly, or use a sandwich press if you have one. Place each cooked patty on a slice of grilled bread.

Mix the cilantro into the reserved sauce, spoon over the patties, add a layer of potato sticks, top with remaining bread slices and serve.
