Barbecued Chicken

Servings: 12

2 whole chicken cut up

For the seasoning mix:
3 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons onion powder
1 tablespoon paprika
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 ½ teaspoons chili powder
1 ½ teaspoons pepper
¼ teaspoon ground turmeric
1 pinch ground red pepper

For the barbeque sauce:
2 cups ketchup
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons dried onion minced
2 tablespoons orange juice thawed
1 tablespoon seasoning mix
½ teaspoon liquid smoke

Pat chicken pieces dry so seasoning coats well and set aside. Combine seasoning mix ingredients and sprinkle generously over both sides of the chicken. Reserve 1 tablespoon mix for sauce and store leftovers in a covered container. Grill chicken, skin side down, uncovered, over medium coals for 20 minutes. Turn and grill 20 to 30 minutes more or until chicken is tender and no longer pink. Meanwhile, combine all sauce ingredients in a small bowl. During the last 10 minutes of grilling, brush chicken often with sauce.
