Goetta was created in Greater Cincinnati's German immigrant community in the late 1800's. It is a delicious blend of pork, beef, and whole grain, steel cut oats. Goetta is traditionally prepared like sausage patties.
1 pound ground beef
1 pound ground pork
8 cups waters
2 ½ cups pinhead oatmeal
1 large onion sliced
1 to 4 bay leaves
salt and pepper
In a large stockpot, bring the water to a boil and add the oats, salt and pepper. Cover pot and simmer for 2 hours. Add the meat, onions and spices, cover and cook for another hour, stirring occasionally. Pour the mixture into load pans and cool in the refrigerator until firm. Slice the goetta and fry until browned.
