Lentil and Ham Soup

Recipe from: Damsel in dis Dress

1 tablespoon bacon grease, or butter
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 smoked ham hocks
1 pound lentils, (2 ½ cups)
1 large carrot, finely diced
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
1 bay leaf
7 cups water

Sauté onion in bacon grease or butter until translucent. Combine all ingredients and simmer soup, covered partially, stirring occasionally, 1 ½ hours. Discard bay leaf and remove meat from hocks. Chop meat and stir into soup.
