According to the Geneva Accords of 1954 the forces of former French supporters and communist nationalists were separated south and north, respectively, with the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone, at the 17th parallel, between — A Partition of Vietnam, with Ho Chi Minh's Democratic Republic of Vietnam in North Vietnam, and Emperor Bao Dai's State of Vietnam in the South Vietnam.

Ngân Hàng Quồc Gia Việt Nam (National Bank of Việt Nam)

After the August Revolution in 1945, the government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam gradually attempted to exercise a monetary system independent from France. On May 6, 1951, president Hồ Chí Minh signed decree 15/SL on establishment of National Bank of Vietnam (Ngân Hàng Quồc Gia Việt Nam).

1951-1953 Issue

In 1952 all previously issued notes were withdrawn and demoneitzed. Notes in "new" Đồng values, issue dated 1951 and later, were printed in Czechoslovakia and remained in circulation until 1958. They were the last wartime notes issued during fighting against the French, and they became the official currency of the post-1954 Independent Democratic Republic of Viet Nam (North Vietnam).

Cộng Hòa Xã Hội Chủ Nghĩa (Socialist Republic of Việt Nam)

North and South Vietnam were united under the name of Socialist Republic of Việt Nam on 2 July 1976 after the Democratic Republic of Việt Nam (North Việt Nam) and the southern Peoples Revoluntionary Government with assistance from China, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union, won their long war against the Republic of Việt Nam (South Việt Nam). In July 1976, the National Bank of Vietnam (the central bank of Republic of Vietnam) was merged into the State Bank of Vietnam.

Ngân Hàng Nhà Nước Việt Nam (State Bank of Việt Nam)

1976 Dated Issue

Northern 1958 and Southern 1966-dated notes were exchanged in 1978 for 1976-dated notes to unify the currency of North and South Việt Nam. All of the old northern and southern Xu and Hào notes continued as legal tender, but the old Đồng notes were overstamped with "Da Thu", marked with an "X", and/or destroyed.

From 1975 to 1985: This is the ten-year postwar economic recovery after the liberation and reunification of the country. As such, Vietnam built up the new banking system under the new government, establishing a country-wide unified banking system and liquidating the banking system of the previous government in the South. Accordingly, the Vietnam National Bank of the government of the Republic of Vietnam (in the South) was nationalized and unified with the system of the State Bank of Vietnam, carrying out together the task of currency unification in the country. It issued new kinds of banknotes of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and revoked the old banknotes in both the South and the North in 1978.

2003 Issue

Starting in 2003, Vietnam replaced its cotton banknotes with plastic polymer banknotes, which it claims will save money. Many newspapers in the country criticized these changes, citing mistakes in printing and alleging that the son of the governor of the State Bank of Vietnam benefited from printing contracts. The government clamped down on these criticisms by banning two newspapers from publishing for a month and considering other sanctions on other newspapers.
