Newtons at work
- A day in the life of VtHick (Hardy Macia)
Hardy Macia's day with his Newton.
- Animal Resource Management System
Animal Resource Management Systems are used by pharmaceutical, nutrition and cosmetic companies to track, manage and analyze test results on laboratory animals.
- British Sepu Kangri Expedition 1997
An Apple Newton MessagePad 130 is coupled with an Agfa ePhoto 307 Digital Camera and a Mobiq Satellite Phone to provide images of Chris Bonington's latest adventure of exploring and climbing in this remote and unexplored region of Tibet.
- Cyberguide
A team at Georgia Tech is implementing a project called Cyberguide. It is based on the US TIGER/Line data, which is a vector based map. They are planning to have a GPS, and some versions may have a digital camera attached. Some other features include being able to add your own points of interest. They have a prototype on a portable PC, and they are currently implementing on MP130's while waiting for the MP2000 to come out (because of all the vector rendering)
- Field computers for Animal Trackers
The Animal Tracking Project was done by Jacqlyn Edge, Andrea Foster, Lindsay Steventon, all students in the Computer Science Department at the University of Capetown in South Africa. They interfaced NS BASIC to a GPS (Global Positioning System) to enable highly skilled (but illiterate) animal trackers to record their observations in the field. The trackers take the units out into the wild to count animals: the program has graphic buttons for them to tap when they spot an animal and the GPS records their current position.
- LinkPAD for LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems)
LinkPAD is a wireless, handheld, data entry system providing sample login and results entry directly into a LIMS. LinkPAD eliminates paper entries, lab notebooks, and their associated transcription errors, entry dating, entry signature, and management & control problems. Information on Planet Computing and LinkPAD is available at http://www.aplanet.com. LinkPAD combines the Apple Newton MessagePad, a barcode wand, a wireless network adapter and Planet Computing's LinkPAD program, enabling your lab personnel to enter measurements at the time and point they are taken, sign or initial the input, and wirelessly transmit the data directly into your LIMS database.
- Newtons Find Their Niche
Mitre Corp. and the Air Force's Electronics System Center have adapted the Newton as a platform for locating land mines in Bosnia. Coordinates of mines are loaded into memory via cellular pager as they are found, and information is distributed via satellite. A built-in Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver monitors the PDA's location and sounds an alarm when it is near a danger area.
- Police Palmtop Project
Metro Nashville Police are developing a Newton specific mobile system. The device will be a ruggedized MP2K with an integrated CDPD modem. The goal of the device is to give mobile police officers access to the information services they need to get their job done without taking them off the streets. For instance: access to on-site warrant, arrest history, stolen, or vehicle databases; upload suspect interviews; communicate GPS location data; wirelessly submit encrypted reports; and email.
- Project ProMed
Project ProMed started in January 1993 as a cooperative agreement between the Department of Defense and Apple Computer, Inc. to evaluate the potential use of the Newton ® Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) device in a medical setting. Since this proof of concept phase, the project has evolved to now encompass other PDA devices, the use of wireless networking in medical settings (both within MTFs and in the field), and to develop systems that make use of PDAs as end agents in a wireless distributed computing environment that enable access to remotely based information (including that resident on the Internet as well as large, durable locally stored sources like the Meditag).
- PsychSoft
Special education law requires a documented observation of a child as part of a set of requirements to classify children into funding categories. Valuable time is spent observing children directly in the classroom, calculating the data, and writing up the summary of information for a child. Observations are done with various types of paperwork and degrees of complexity. Several computer assisted observation systems are available but are expensive and difficult to master. The Systematic Observation Software for the Newton helps the school psychologist perform an observation with no paperwork and minimal effort in terms of written information, calculation and analysis of data.
- The Art of Newton
A site where you can find out about how your fellow Newton users integrate the Newton in their everyday activities.
- The CIS Solution
A Software Package which turns the Mobile Computer into a "Crime Information System" which Police Officers can use to log details of crime reports. It can be used effectively by Officers after a very small amount of training, because the package is both intuitive and easy-to-use.
- The Evolution of Computers
An article on how PDAs fit into the computer revolution.
- The PNC Solution
A Software Package which turns the Apple Newton into a "Mobile PNC Terminal". Using a Newton and a GSM Phone, law enforcement officers can perform rapid: - Vehicle Checks
- Person Checks
- The USDA plans to create a forms-management application for the MessagePad 2000
The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service will use the devices to collect information on the status of the nation's natural resources.
- Towards the Electronic Cue Sheet
Sandiway Fong's project to put together an electronic cue sheet for bicycle navigation using GPS and the Apple Newton.
- Virtual Intern, the fastest, easiest way to manage your medical information!
Many different ways the Newton Message Pad is used in the field of medicine and health care -- Round Management, Medical Notes, Visit/Procedure Charge Capture, Scut/To Do Manager, and more.
