Metropolitan Transportation Authority
The MTA is the largest public-transportation provider in the western Hemisphere. Its agencies serve a population of 13.2 million people in the 4,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. MTA services move 1.6 billion rail and bus customers a year - approximately one in every four users of mass transit in the United States and two-thirds of the nation's rail riders.

New York State Department of Social Services
The agency supervises the work of the 58 local social services districts (New York City and 57 counties) and apportions to localities funds which have been approved by the state Legislature or the federal government. The department is responsible for supervising a range of programs which provide cash assistance and support to eligible children, families and adults, including Aid to Families with Dependent children (AFDC), Home Relief (HR), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Emergency Assistance for Families and Adults (EAF, EAA), Energy Assistance and Food Stamps. The department also administers the Medicaid program, which finances medical care for persons who are eligible, whether because of low income or special medical needs.
New York State Department of State
The Department oversees many programs which provide a variety of services to citizens, community organizations, businesses and local governments. From enforcing the state's building code to operating the Coastal Management Program and training firefighters and local planning and zoning officials, much of the work done at the Department is with local governments.
New York State Education Department
The State Education Department is responsible for general supervision of all educational institutions in the State, for operating certain educational and cultural institutions, and for certifying teachers and certifying or licensing practitioners of thirty-one professions.
