These are the films I have seen in 2003 AD. * in front of a film means I saw it sitting on my (or someone else's) couch. / at the front and back of a title indicates a repeat viewing. + indicates a projected video showing. Short subjects of less than 30 minutes duration are indicated with an sXX for its number and those between 30 and 60 minutes mXX. $ means it was a digitally projected laser presentation. And away we go.

I don't much like the Dumont, but at least it has some relation to the namesake town, unlike this ineptly-written (flagrant abuse of timely drive-bys for plot advancement), thoroughly generic crime flick. Not a Joshua tree or Marine in sight; heck, at least Dumont bothered to get the town's name right...
292. (30 Sep) *King Solomon's Mines (1950, Compton Bennett & Andrew Marton) [B]
Solid, if rather stolid, old-style matinee fare. Just the thing to watch when you're stuck at home with chicken soup in one hand and Kleenex on the other.
291. (29 Sep) *The Passionate Plumber (1932, Edward Sedgwick) [C-]
Little physical comedy to be found here; instead we're treated to routine thirties fluff with Keaton proving to be a most painful and unnatural deliverer of dialogue at this stage of his career; it's as if he's waiting to read the cue card until after his partner is finished, takes several seconds to learn the line and then delivers it.

100% pure, unadulterated horseshit; are we supposed to take this jimcrackery seriously just because the camera's like all verite?

234. (24 Aug) Step Into Liquid (2003, Dana Brown) [C]
The (unintentional) lesson of this is that the youthful energy and idealism of The Endless Summer has been replaced with middle-age complacency. Some awesome surf footage, but outside of that really spotty; the lowpoint being a can't-we-all-just-get-along sequence about a program bringing Protestant and Catholic Irish kids together to surf (all scored to sad Gaelic folk music) that ends with a shot of the Malloy brothers (best known for that cinematic touchstone Out Cold) gazing westward across the Atlantic while 9/11 is invoked.

186. (03 Jul) *L'Appartement (1996, Gilles Mimouni) [B]
185. (02 Jul) /*Commando/ (1985, Mark L. Lester) [C+]
The quintessential Eighties Ah-nuld movie, this often (intentionally?) hilarious outing has lots of over-the-top action, enough horrid acting to make Scharwzenegger look respectable in comparison, and the inane wisecracks we've come to know and love.
184. (01 Jul) *Picture Claire (2001, Bruce McDonald) [C+]
183. (28 Jun) Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan (1972, Chu Yuan) [B+]
Clearly this was never released in the US, as this would have become an exploitation classic; you've got your lesbian madams with a fondness for ripping people's hearts out and licking their blood, you've got a hint of Seventies wah-wah on the soundtrack, lots of kung-fu action, some mild S&M and nudity for the pervs, and for the more high-minded among the grindhouse elite, just enough Sternbergian soft-focus and Ophulsian tracking shots to make you realize the director is slumming it up as much as you are.
182. (28 Jun) The Blood Brothers (1973, Chang Cheh) [B+]
181. (28 Jun) Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003, McG) [C]
Pretty much like the first, but whereas as the first had a handful of scenes that were immensely enjoyable by themselves -- smacking Crispin Glover up, Drew's fight set to "Song 2" -- there's nothing here on the same level, and the supporting cast is much, much weaker. Also, Demi Moore comeback? Bad Idea.
180. (28 Jun) 28 Days Later (2002, Danny Boyle) [C]
Don't understand why this further demonstration of Boyle's incompetence as a director is getting the raves; a possibly intriguing screenplay (though the whole "rage" as a literal disease bit is inane) grounded by misguided use of DV, faddish overkill of Saving Private Ryan's strobing effect, and frankly unfrightening "zombies". Did somebody not realize the scary thing about zombies is their unrelentless unstopability? Rage zombies may be faster, but dudes who get winded chasing a car just ain't the same.

120. (19 Apr) Julie's Ghost (2002, Bettina Wilhelm) [C-]
This is quite bad; the rather drab and somber tone that Wilhelm tries for simply can't be supported by such weightless material. Testud and the girl playing the ghost have zero chemistry together; it's like they're acting in completely different movies that are being shot at the same time.
119. (19 Apr) Messidor (1979, Alain Tanner) [C+]
What I admire about MESSIDOR is alas, the kind of thing that's more interesting to discuss than watch. I found the film a bit of a chore to sit through, since Tanner manages to demonstrate the state of aimless wandering all too well; as the film progresses, the film's sense of geography devolves into a random series of city-mountain-countryside backgrounds, and the narrative starts introducing odd elisions that destroys any sense of how much time is passing between each scene. I find it hard to fault Tanner for this, as it's clearly what he's trying to accomplish, but it makes for sometimes soporific viewing. It didn't help that I found both lead actresses, at best, merely adequate at filling out thinly-conceived characters.
