Charming, but thin, film adaptation of Ludwig Biedelmans' classic children's books that benefits greatly from noncondescending performances from its two main adult actors, Frances McDormand and Nigel Hawthorne. The juvenile members are fine and generally free from cloying cuteness. There isn't much else to the film otherwise. The plotting is episodic and perfunctory -- there's a kidnapping but it feels like it's included so that there could be a climax to the film -- and the film is content to coast on its considerable charm.
