Wild Wild West - D

A mess. There's the kernel of a good movie in Bo Welch's fine production design for Wild Wild West, but it's drowned out by some of the most appalling acting in some time, a bombastic and grating score, and the usual light touch that Sonnenfeld has is leaden here; every scene is played at the same overbearing pitch. Someone forgot to tell Kenneth Branagh, Kevin Kline, and Will Smith that hammy acting is best when there's a straight man to play against, so we end up with a scenery-chewing contest where the viewer loses.
