To Die For (Gus Van Sant)

Rating: 2.5

Great performances (Nicole Kidman is a wonder) and direction (Van Sant
back in top form), in service of a thoroughly mediocre and derivative
script. I don't know who imagined that anyone wanted to see this story
told again with so little narrative imagination; fortunately, the film
has visual imagination to spare, so it's not the waste of time it might
have been in less skilled hands. Attempted satire regarding our
obsession with television and celebrity is tame and trite. Fans of Van
Sant should check it out anyway.
