MANY YEARS LATER: Originally there was some stuff at this point about a distinction I made between "old" lists and "contemporaneous" lists, the latter being those from 1988 onward. At the time, I had some weird utopian notion of keeping the original lists from recent years intact, and so I had tables comparing the list I made in January of 19XX to the current revised version. However, I've now decided that's kind of stupid. I've also decided henceforth to file all films in the year of their public premiere, which entailed rejiggering 90% of the lists, especially those from the 90s to the present.

So here's the new deal. "Conspicuously absent" still refers to notable movies that I've seen but that didn't make the list -- some of which I may like a lot, others of which I may well despise. But films that were actually on the list at some time in the past (though possibly in a different year) will now be placed in Honorable Mention. This will help keep me from committing seppuku when I get to the current decade -- not yet revised as of this writing -- and have to remove terrific films from their lists (since the IMDb places them in years that happen to be very strong, e.g. 2002) while promoting marginal titles to replace them (in a year that is now ridiculously weak, e.g. 2004). Assume that any film in the Honorable Mention category could easily be listworthy in a different year.

Because I've seen only about fifty-five feature-length silent films to date, there's no way in hell that I can do year-by-year lists for the period prior to 1930. I don't want to ignore the pre-sound masterpieces altogether, however, so until the day comes when I can break it down (a day that might not be too far off: MoMA has a massive silent film program in the works), here are my favorites from cinema's infancy:
