Compositions

Links to PDFs of sheet music of some of my work (more to come). Some of these are from before I changed my name, so if you run into them elsewhere with the wrong name attached, that's why.

The thumbnails that link to PDFs are actually page-sized PNG files themselves, so if you prefer PNG instead of PDF, you should be able to view them full size by right-clicking on them.

I've made multiple versions of a few of these -- e.g. different clefs / octaves for different instruments, or adding tabulature (guitar/mandolin/bass/lute). If it seems like there's interest, I may upload the alternate versions.

An ADD Medley
An amusement -- several familiar tunes, joined interestingly.

The Annoyed Cat
A tune on behalf of my previous cat, Perrine, on a day when she seemed a bit vexed.

The Armigerous Goose
Dedicated to Baron Rorik Fredericson, aka Rorik Greygoose, who died 2020-04-27. Yes, there is a story behind this tune and its title. Mike Stoddard and I wrote this together in 2006.

(Donald Willie and his) Big Orange Grouchy Cat
Sort of a reel, kinda. Inspired by a stray comment at a Homespun Ceilidh Band rehearsal.

Claire Elaine's Jig
For the daughter of a bandmate, composed a few months before her birth. Sort of a blues jig.

Dark Maiden of the East
A waltz with a cumulative structure like an estampie. Composed with viola da gamba in mind, but it works well on guitar and other instruments as well.

Eff the Big C
-- notated for bass
-- notated for guitar
-- notated for violin
A tune of defiance and determination and maybe a little offpissedness at a nasty disease -- dedicated to oncologists, and to victims and survivors of cancer, along with anyone with a loved one in any of those categories.

The Gay White Dog
A tune for Captain's Fancy Valentine Sweetheart, a gay, white dog who is a character in the Skin Horse webcomic by Shaenon K. Garrity & Jeffrey C. Wells.
(Not yet transcribed.)

Lament for the Water Bearer
A wistful tune in memory of one of my campmates at Pennsic, Catalina ("Cat") Beatriz de las Torres, mka[*] Debbie Waldinger, who was murdered in October of 2019. I intend to try to write another piece to capture her joie de vivre. This tune represents our (her friernds) sorrow at her death.

[*] "mundanely known as", i.e. "known in the regular world outside the SCA as..."

My Favourite Cousin
For Ninja Bunny, my unofficially-adopted cousin. (Mind the key signature! It's in C-freygish.) This fingers easily on soprano ukulele (or guitar w/ capo @ 5th fret) as is but I need to figure out where to transpose it to make it work on more instruments.

Nary A Wink
A tune for a redhead, an especially cute one.

Samhain Eve
A tricky bass-guitar solo inspired by Hallowe'en (but not just for then), meant as a companion piece for another tune I haven't finished yet. It's also meant to be a bit of a show-off piece for bassists. (3 pages)

The Sparrow Is an Underrated Bird
The "little brown birds", though common, are not boring. I frequently find myself charmed by them, especially when they feel brave enough to come close. This is for someone who described herself to me as a sparrow.

Thimblefuls of Beer
Inspired by the 2020-11-14 Skin Horse comic strip, in which gerbil Artie asks human Sergio, who has found a rat-operated microbrewery, "How are you drunk on thimbles of beer?" I'm aiming for a slightly tipsy, somewhat merry feel here. I composed this on mandolin, to try to make sure the fingering is fiddle-friendly.

Tools

I mostly use ABC tools for composing, arranging, and transcribing music: abcm2ps, abctab2ps, abc2midi, the abcpp preprocessor, and ps2pdf (which is part of Ghostscript). I'm not using abc2svg yet, because I still don't have a clean, scriptable workflow for generating PDF from SVG, though I'm still working on that. Using abc2svg to render the web copies is on my to-do list.

Using abcpp macros, I can make one source file produce multiple renderings of a tune -- changing clefs for different instruments, for example, or selecting which tabulature to display (if I've typed in tabs for that tune) -- without having to keep multiple source files in sync when I edit something. This does make for some complicated ABC files, putting my background as a computer programmer to use ... but I can also use the same macros to generate simpler ABC files corresponding to the different renderings, for folks I want to share my tunes with as ABC files.

My programming background is probably also why I prefer the command-line ABC tools, things I can run from shell scripts and makefiles, instead of the integrated GUI tools for ABC that are also available.

For recording, I'll capture scratch versions of tunes with the Sound Recorder app that came on my phone, but for any serious home recording I break out proper microphones and Audacity.
