Jeff Goff, known to many as DrForr, passed away on March 13th, 2020 in a snorkeling accident. Jeff and I met about 20 years ago at - as best I can remember - the first Yet Another Perl Conference. Jeff was a professional Perl programmer and I was... a Perl Programmer. Over the last two decades, I got to know Jeff fairly well, although there was so much to Jeff that it was hard sometimes to really feel you could know it all. His interests ranged from parrots to origami to glass blowing to music and, recently to scuba and snorkeling. Last September, Jeff and I were attending a concert and he asked me about the JoCo cruise, which I had been on several times. I talked the cruise up, as I am wont to do, as it is generally a very good experience. Not too long after, Jeff signed up for this year's cruise and got involved with others sailing on the Facebook group for the trip, joining in on many of the topics raised, unsurprisingly. I saw Jeff a number of times on the cruise, but not usually for a great length of time, as there's so much to do on it that you often don't see people as much as you think you will. I did see Jeff on the 12th, and it's odd to realize I may likely have been the last person from the circles we traveled in together to see him. Jeff's passing is a great blow, but I take comfort in the many lovely things people have said about him in memoriam. I was particularly glad to see messages from friends of mine who only knew Jeff slightly mentioning their fond memories of him. Also, I'm glad to say that he had a very good time on the cruise. Jeff was always interesting and generous. His many interests could probably fill several books, and he was always inclined to give technical advice to those in need. He was very active in the Perl community as well as the Raku (formerly Perl 6) community. Though I took interest in hearing Jeff talk about his many activites, I was not involved in such things as glass blowing etc., so I could only follow along and be fascinated. Where we did have a strong common interest is one I have not mentioned yet - Bad movies. Jeff's online handle, DrForr, was after Dr. Clayton Forrester of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fame. Many years ago - again, I can't remember how many, as it didn't seem as important to document at the time - Jeff and I started playing bad movies for people at YAPC (now simply The Perl Conference) every year. Eventually, it became popular enough that it was made an official part of the conference. Jeff always had some obscure film no one was aware of to show, and was always there with good advice and opinions on what to screen. With the global pandemic going on, The Perl Conference in Houston has been cancelled this year, which means that there will be no Bad Movie Night. I had intended to dedicate it to Jeff this year, but perhaps it's fitting that, for a year at least, it will not happen without him. There's probably more I could say, but many others have given their memories, and I've gone on for quite a bit already. All I will say at this point is that Jeff was a good friend and, moreover, a good person. I, and many others, will miss him greatly.
