TAIWAN EARTHQUAKE SHAKES UP CHIP MARKET
The semiconductor market is already reeling from the impact of yesterday's
catastrophic earthquake in Taiwan, with Korean analysts predicting that
South Korean chip makers would benefit from the disruption in Taiwanese chip
supply. "It's a terrible thing to say, but what is a disaster for Taiwan is
good for our chipmakers, our chemical firms, and our stock market," says one
Korean broker. Meanwhile, chip manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor
Manufacturing was reporting power outages, but no damage to production
lines. Taiwan chipmakers supply about 12% of the world's dynamic random
access memory chips, while the three biggest South Korean chip firms
accounting for about 35% of the market. (Business Day 21 Sep 99)
