You are invited to the Tanenbaum mailing list! (1) What's this about? (2) How can I join this list? (3) How do I get off this list? (4) How do I send a message to the list? (5) Tell me about ellisisland.org! *** (1) What's this about? A bunch of us were talking in Chicago at Jacob's Bar Mitzvah in 2002 (Jacob is the son of Judy and Mark Davis (they also have a daughter Rachel); Judy is daughter of Sue Wolff (Sara Tanenbaum)). We decided to set up a mailing list to keep in touch and to exchange information. We also discussed the possibility of a Tanenbaum convention next year. Yahoo! offers free mailing lists (they call them "groups") in a format that's very easy to administer, which is why I suggested using it. These lists are supported by the small ads you'll see at the bottom of every message. If anyone cares, we can pay to have an ad-free mailing list -- I think the cost is $4.95 per month. This mailing list is currently open to anyone in the world who wants to join it. It's unmoderated -- that is, anyone can send any kind of message to the list. We can use it for anything, but "anything" should be related to the Tanenbaums: our genealogy, important events and news, reminiscing, etc. Please use the list responsibly. If we have problems, we can restrict membership and "moderate" the messages. You are invited to join the list at your convenience. Or you can just send me a note if you need assistance. You can see more about the list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tanenbaums. Also, if you prefer, you can tell Yahoogroups to combine all the messages during the day into a single message for you (a "digest"); or to "hold" all your messages so you will only see them when you visit the website. *** (2) How can I join this list? Easy! To sign up by e-mail, send a message to: tanenbaums-subscribe@yahoogroups.com The subject and message are ignored. Yahoogroups will send a message back to your e-mail address to verify that you want to sign up. Reply to the message (again with anything or nothing) to acknowledge. Or, to sign up via the web, visit "groups.yahoo.com", search on "tanenbaums" and follow the instructions. Tell all our relatives about this list! You can see who's already subscribed at "groups.yahoo.com". *** (3) How do I get off this list? Easy! You can unsubscribe yourself any time after you subscribe by sending an email to: tanenbaums-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com The subject line and body of your message are ignored. *** (4) How do I send a message to the list? Just e-mail your message to "tanenbaums@yahoogroups.com". Yahoogroups will automatically resend it to everyone on the list. This usually happens within seconds, but could take as much as several minutes. *** (5) Tell me about ellisisland.org! If you have a web browser (FireFox, Safari, Internet Exploder etc), you can see and search some of the Ellis Island immigration records. The records cover only third- and fourth-class passengers (the fancy people didn't go through the same paperwork), and, of course, spelling of names is always chancy. Several Tannenbaums (with that spelling) came to the US on July 2nd, 1911, from Bremen Germany, on the George Washington: Name................... Gender. Age.... Marital Ethnic. Origin......... Tannenbaum, Ester F 54y W Hebrew Siedlec, Russia Tannenbaum, Taube F 25y M Hebrew Siedlec, Russia Tannenbaum, Mojsche M 18y S Hebrew Iwanow, Russia (*) Tannenbaum, Gerszon M 11y S Hebrew Siedlec, Russia Tannenbaum, Ryfke F 8y S Hebrew Siedlec, Russia Tannenbaum, Lejbisz M 4y S Hebrew Siedlec, Russia Tannenbaum, Motel M 9m S Hebrew Siedlec, Russia (*) Not clear if this guy is related; some 451 people with this spelling of Tannenbaum are in the computerized records. Another website with many, many useful links is www.jewishlink.net. Thanks -- David Wolff (Sara "Sue" Tanenbaum + Leon Wolff -> Deborah (now Horn), David, and Judy (now Davis))
