Sample Letter ___________________ __, 2011 Hon. Robert B. Tierney, Chairman Landmarks Preservation Commission 1 Centre Street, 9th Floor North New York, NY 10007 Re: Support of the Proposed Riverside-West End Historic District Extension I Dear Chairman Tierney: I am writing to thank you and the Landmarks Preservation Commission ("LPC") for creating the proposed Riverside-West End Historic District Extension I. I strongly support the original boundary description of the proposed Riverside Drive-West End Avenue Historic District Extension I, as created by the LPC, and strongly oppose any carve-outs or exclusions to the boundaries in order to accommodate proposed construction of any new high-rise apartment buildings. The original boundaries, as proposed by the LPC, are necessary to preserve the character and historical significance of the proposed Historic District and to prevent further encroachment by buildings that are out of proportion to the scale of existing buildings in the proposed Historic District. This proposed Historic District, which comprises late 19th Century brownstones and townhouses and elegant pre-war buildings from the early 20th Century, offers a unique sense of place and history of New York City and deserves to be preserved for future generations of New Yorkers and tourists to enjoy. In addition, the proposed Riverside-West End Historic District Extension I includes numerous individual landmarks and borders on three existing historic districts. I believe designating Extension I a Historic District, without exclusions or carve-outs, makes historical, architectural, and aesthetic sense. I thank you for all your preservation work throughout New York City. Sincerely Yours, |
