Right, if you haven't read the manual, you can get pretty frustrated trying
to graph something simple like y=sin(x), which at first blush is a
perfectly reasonable guess for a likely equation framed in a very familiar
syntax. But the calculation staionary doesn't know what your talking about
and wonders what a y is. Instead, you have to frame the left hand as
function of some variable and define the function on the right hand.

If you type f(x)=sin(x) and, with the cursor positioned somewhere within
that expression, type cmd-g, the function will be graphed with the y axis
showing values of f(x) for values in the x axis. If you type cmd-opt-g,
then it will graph using polar coordinates, so, for example, typing
cmd-opt-g while the cursor is positioned in the expression, f(x)=4, will
produce the graph of a circle with radius 4.

There are several built-in functions and you can define your own as well.
As far as I know, you can't graph inequalities, which is too bad since they
are some of the most beautiful and fun.

There is also support for something called "parameterized functions," but I
must confess that I haven't the slightest idea what they're talking about.
