This is one of the Academy's earliest reports. We are not confident that these early reports are accurate. Please use it with caution.

Greetings,

Here's the information we have on your device, "Per fess gules and chequy argent and azure, in chief a sun in splendour or."

Based on your comments, we are assuming that you want the sun to be entirely on the top half of the shield. We found no conflicts, and it's our opinion that it fits the style requirements of the SCA.

Although your design is probably acceptable under Society rules, it has some features which are not found in heraldic arms in your period. We found no 14th-century arms which were blazoned, "Per fess <tincture> and chequy." However, we did find many arms which were blazoned "Chequy, a chief <tincture>." These arms are drawn so that the "chief" takes up half, or almost half, of the field, and would be blazoned as "per fess" using SCA rules. (1)

We could not find any 14th century British arms with a single, round charge in the center of a chief or the upper half of the field. More likely arms would be "Per fess gules and chequy argent and azure, in chief three (or two) suns in splendor Or."

If you would like any further assistance, please let us know.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
