Greetings,

Here's the information we have on your name.

We haven't found a period example of the name "Olivia." We have evidence that "Oliva" was used in Italy and Spain in your period; it was also used in France and England, and probably elsewhere. Our Spanish sources say that "Olivia" is a variant of the name "Oliva," but don't provide any dates or examples. "Olivia" was first used in England in the 18th century; it may have been imported from Italy or made popular by its use as the name name of a character in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.

Although the chances are fairly good that "Olivia" is a period name in Italian or Spanish, we would suggest that you use the name "Oliva," which was used, in various forms, throughout Europe. It would be an appropriate name for an Italian or Spanish persona.

We didn't find examples of names which meant "of the lake," but we found enough similar names ("of the mountain," "of the valley," and "of the river," for example) that we have no doubt that "of the lake" would be an appropriate name. In either Italian or Spanish, "of the lake" would be "del Lago."

Arval D'Espas Nord, Elsbeth Anne Roth, and Ivanor of Sighty Crag researched your name.

I hope we have been of service. Please let us know if you need further assistance.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
