Greetings,

The single best source for western Scandinavian names (which would include names appropriate to settlers in Greenland) is

Lind, E. H. Norsk-Islandska Dopnamn ock Fingerade Namm fran Medeltiden. Uppsala: 1905-1915. Supplement, Oslo: Norske Videnskaps-Akedemi, 1931.

This source is in Swedish, but it's not too difficult to work with. It's not widely distributed, but you may be able to get it through inter-library loan.

A more easily readable source is "The Old Norse Name" by Geirr-Bassi Haraldsson. It's a list of Old Norse names from reliable sources, and includes a short discussion on the formation, grammar, and pronunciation of Norse names. This book is not in libraries, but a senior herald in your area may have a copy that you can consult. If would like to purchase it, you can get it from this address:

Master Serwyl ap Morgan

Jacksonville, FL. 32223

We don't have references for Greenlandic names in particular; we're assuming that the names of Greenlanders would be similar to those of the Icelandic people who settled there. Histories and stories from Iceland might also be good sources for Greenlandic names. The last contact between Greenland and the rest of Europe was 1410; the colony died out sometime in the early 15th century.

If we can be of any further help, please let us know.

Arval D'Espas Nord, Lindorm Eriksson, Hartmann Rogge, Ivanor of Sighty Crag, and Tangwystl verch Morgant Glasvryn all researched your name.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
