Academy of Saint Gabriel Report 095

This report is available at http://www.s-gabriel.org/095

This is one of the Academy's earliest reports. We are not confident that these early reports are accurate. Please use it with caution.

We did find "Thrift" in the "Dictionary of Scottish Surnames," by George Black, first recorded in the 16th century. However, this does not necessarily mean that your family came from Scotland. The name is also found in the "Dictionary of British Surnames" by PH Reaney, which includes only English names. Last names have gone through many shifts, and it's possible that your name was changed from some other original source. This is especially true for Americans--many people changed their names or had their names modified during immigration. The only real way to find out your family history is to do genealogical research. There are sources of genealogical information on the Web, which you can find with a Web search for "genealogy."

We hope this has been helpful. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

Sharon Krossa, Josh Mittleman, Heather Rose Jones, and Jan Frelin researched your name.

Sincerely,
Alan Terlep
