ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 1013 http://www.s-gabriel.org/1013 ************************************ From: "S Friedemann" 13 Jul 1998 Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel! You asked about the name , which you wanted to use for a Romany persona living in Morocco and traveling to Spain between 1400 and 1500. Here is the information we have found. Our knowledge of Romany Gypsy names is quite limited; we did not find the name . The best information we have is that the Gypsies did not use Romany names in public. The name that you would have been known by would probably be an Arabic name, considering the area you have chosen to be from. You might be interested to know that the Gypsies arrived in Spain in 1447, having spread across Europe from the east. [1] We have no evidence that there were Gypsies in North Africa. If you would like help choosing an Arabic name, perhaps one that sounds similar to , please write again and we would be delighted to assist you. There are two articles in our library that might be helpful. Arabic Naming Practices and Period Names List http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/daud/arabic-naming/ A List of Arabic Women's Names http://www.us.itd.umich.edu/~ximenez/s.gabriel/docs/arabicwomen.html We're sorry that we could not be more useful to you, and hope that you will not hesitate to write again if any part was unclear or if you have further questions. Research and commentary on this letter was provided by Arval Benicoeur, Lindorm Eriksson, Pedro de Alcazar, and Walraven van Nijmegen.
