Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel!

You asked for help documenting the Russian feminine name <Katiya von Salza>
or <Katya von Salza>, which you wanted to use between 1250 and 1300.  Here
is the information we have found.

Before I start, I'd like to clarify the service that the Academy offers. We
try to help Societyfolk in choosing and using names that fit the historical
cultures they are trying to re-create. Our research can sometimes be used to
support submissions to the College of Arms, but that it not our goal and our
results are often incompatible with the College's needs. If your main goal
is to register a particular name, then we may not be able to help you.

<Katya> is a Russian form of <Katherine>.  However, as <von Salza> is
German, we suggest that you consider a German form of <Katherine> instead of
<Katya>.  We find two instances of <Katherine> between 1250 and 1300 [3],
and the following from the period just after that:  [1]

<Katharina> 1348
<Katherin> 1337
<Katherine> 1366
<Katheryn> 1383
<Keterlyn> 1366
<Kethe> 1365, 1369, 1383
<Katerina> 1350
<Katusch> 1365

This last example shows Slavic (though not Russian) influence, and
<Katerina> is clearly the most compatible with the full Russian form
<Yekaterina>.

<Salz> and <Salza> were common place names.  We find <Hermann von Salza> in
1226 and <Bert. von Saltza> in 1286.  [2]

A name such as <Katerina von Saltza> would be an authentic choice for your
period.
