ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 1183 http://www.s-gabriel.org/1183 ************************************ 19 Aug 1998 From: (Josh Mittleman) Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel! You asked for information about the name and about names from Siberia. I'm afraid we haven't found much information to help you. In our period, the modern area of Siberia was inhabited by many different peoples who spoke vastly different languages from several different linguistic families: Turkic (Yakut, Siberian Tatars), Manchu-Tungus (Evenk, Even), Finno-Ugric (Khanty, Mansi), and Mongolic (Buryat), among others. Southern Siberia was ruled by the Golden Horde of the Mongols in the 10th through mid-15th century. Russia began to colonize the area in the late 16th century; the first expedition in 1581 conquered the small khanate of Sibir, which gave its name to the entire region. Russian trappers and fur traders and Cossack explorers penetrated throughout Siberia to the Bering Sea in the late 16th and 17th centuries, building towns including Tyumen (1585) and Tomsk (1604). We have found no information about names in any of the native languages of Siberia. We do know a considerable amount about period Russian names; you can find an extensive discussion on the web: A Dictionary of Period Russian Names http://www.sca.org/heraldry/paul/ This dictionary contains one name similar to : , also spelled , recorded around 1291 [2]. However, this name would only be appropriate for your persona if you set it very late in period, in the extreme western part of Siberia. We know a little about Mongol names; we have an article: On the Documentation and Construction of Period Mongolian Names http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/baras-aghur/mongolian.html This article does not contains any name much like . I'm sorry we could not be more helpful. Please write us again if any part of it has been unclear or if you have other questions. If you discover any good sources of information on period names from Siberia, we would be very interested to know about them. I was assisted in researching and writing this letter by Alan Fairfax and Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn.
