ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 1186 http://www.s-gabriel.org/1186 ************************************ From: "S Friedemann" 23 Aug 1998 Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel! You asked on the behalf of your husband and his brother for help creating late 13th century Welsh masculine names. The names they were considering are and , and you wanted to know if and would be more appropriate. You also wanted to know if these names would be appropriate for 12th century names. Here is the information we have found. We'd like to compliment you on your research. The names are nearly perfect as they are. We have only a few minor comments to make. The elements of these names are all found in the late 13th century. [1] The forms and are the modern forms of the names and , also spelled . For the 13th century, and would be more appropriate spellings. appears to be a typo for . is a pet form of . is a nickname meaning "white" or "fair." Both elements are found in the 13th century. Both "Kenneric son of Deykin the fair" and "Kedivor son of Deykin the fair" are excellent names for brothers in the 13th century. [1] Both and would also be appropriate for the 12th century. Based on other spellings we've found, the names would probably be spelled , , , or , and , , or . [2] We are unsure if was used in the 12th century. Our sources from this period are mostly legal documents written in Latin by non-Welsh people, and tend to use the formal form of a name, rather than pet forms. Based on other examples that we've seen and what we know of Welsh practices in this period, we believe that might have been used in the 12th century. Since we don't know for sure, your husband and his brother might want to consider simply using , which we found in the 12th century. We hope that this letter has been useful to you, and that you will not hesitate to write again if any part was unclear or if you have further questions.
