Greetings,

We don't have any lists of Scottish Gaelic men's names on-line. We suggest that you look for "The Surnames of Scotland" by George Black and look at names starting with "Mac." Most of them are derived from Scottish Gaelic given names, and Black usually lists the Gaelic form of the name. He often includes modern Gaelic forms rather than medieval ones, but you will still get a good idea of possible names available to you. This book is not too hard to find, and if your local library doesn't carry it you may be able to get it through inter-library loan.

A rarer, but probably more helpful, book is

Jackson, Kenneth. The Gaelic Notes in the Book of Deer. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1972. ISBN = 0 521 08264 1

This book contains many 12th century Gaelic men's names in their medieval forms. If you can find this book, it will be a good source.

Effric neyn Kenyeoch vic Ralte, one of our members, will be adding more information to her web site in the next month. You may want to look at this as well. The URL is:

http://www.stanford.edu/~skrossa/medievalscotland/medieval_scotland.html

We hope this is helpful. If you do use Black's book as a reference, we would be happy to help you determine the medieval Gaelic form of the name you're interested in, and to provide any other assistance you might want.

Effric neyn Kenyeoch vic Ralte and Arval D'Espas Nord worked on this letter.
