ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 1265 http://www.s-gabriel.org/1265 ************************************ From: "S Friedemann" 18 Oct 1998 Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel! You asked for help documenting the name , which you wanted to use as a post-Viking Danish masculine name between 1000 and 1300. Here is the information we have found. Before I start, I'd like to clarify the service that the Academy offers. We try to help Societyfolk in choosing and using names that fit the historical cultures they are trying to re-create. Our research can sometimes be used to support submissions to the College of Arms, but that it not our goal and our results are often incompatible with the College's needs. If your main goal is to register a particular name, then we may not be able to help you. is a form of the name . We find in 1355, 1395, 1400, and in 1392. [1] However, these are the earliest examples that we found, and thus we must conclude that would not be appropriate for your specified period, but only starting in the century after. There are other forms of that would be appropriate for your period though: we found and in the 12th and 13th centuries, as well as circa 1225. [1] These first two are Latin forms of the name, but we believe that the Danish form was quite similar. Our sources for Danish place names are rather slim, but from what we know, does not look to be a properly constructed name. (The : represents an umlaut over the ). The letter is not used in modern Danish, and it wasn't used in medieval Danish, as far as we know. The modern Danish name of the second biggest Danish island is , where the is pronounced like the German . Period forms of that we found are 1443 and 1470 and 1478. There is also a byname (nickname) , for someone living on , found as early as 1311. [1] would be a fine name for the end of your period We hope that this letter has been useful to you, and that you will not hesitate to write again if any part was unclear or if you have further questions. Research and commentary on this letter was provided by Lindorm Eriksson, Talan Gwynek, and Arval Benicoeur.
