Greetings,

The name "Kirkpatrick" derives from the name of a Scottish farm. It means "Patrick's church;" apparently the farm was near a church dedicated to S. Patrick. The name is found in Northern Ireland, which suggests that it was introduced to Ireland during the wave of Scottish immigration to Ireland in the 17th century.

"The Surnames of Scotland" by George Black, p. 407, contains a good deal of information about the Kirkpatrick name and people who have had it. The book is found in many libraries; you may want to read it yourself for more information.

Leslie Schweitzer, Richard Hershberger, Josh Mittleman, and Sharon Krossa contributed to this letter.

We hope this has been helpful. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

Sincerely,
Alan Terlep
