Greetings,

Here's the information we found on the name "Annachie MacAirt."

We couldn't find any reference to the name "Annachie." You said that you were sure it was a medieval name--if you have a reference for it that we're unaware of, we'd be very interested in seeing it.

We found a couple of references to MacAirt, but the best documentation comes from "Irish Names" by O'Corrain and Maguire, which documents the name "Art" as a common name from ancient to modern times. Gaelic words change form based on how they're used in a sentence, and "son of Art" would be "mac Airt." Thus, "mac Airt" would be an acceptable name for a Gaelic speaker in Ireland or Scotland.

We would be happy to help your flatmate find a historical first name. You may also want to give him information from a Web page on Scottish names maintained by Effric neyn Kenyeoch vic Ralte:

Zenobia Naphtali, Tangwystl verch Morgant Glasvryn, Effric neyn Kenyeoch vc Ralte, and Arval D'Espas Nord all contributed to this letter.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

In service,
Alan Fairfax
