ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 1565 http://www.s-gabriel.org/1565 ************************************ From: "S Friedemann" 19 Mar 1999 Greetings from the Academy of Saint Gabriel! You wanted to know what the Carolingian 'Palace School' in the 8th century was called, and if it would be possible to model the name of College branch after it. Here is the information we have found. The Palace School of Charlemagne was composed of the children of the aristocrats gathered at his court. So far as we know, the school had no specific name. Unfortunately, we are therefore unable to recommend any names modeled on this school. In the early Middle Ages, formal learning was generally a feature of monasteries. Since many monasteries were simply named at the place where they were established, you could choose any appropriate place name as the name for your College. If you know what language you'd like to use for your name, we may be able to suggest some sources for appropriate names. There were also some schools, centered on bishops' courts, that were not monastic. Unfortunately, we doubt that they had actual names at all, other than simple "the bishop's school." However, in the British Isles, we find the Latin referring to the retinue of an archbishop in the 7th century and to a choir c. 760; by the 12th century is found as "song-school," and as "grammar-school." Based on these examples, we can recommend "bishop's school." [1] We're sorry that this letter could not be more useful to you, and hope that you will not hesitate to write again if any part was unclear or if you have further questions. Research and commentary on this letter was provided by Pedro de Alcazar, Talan Gwynek, and Arval Benicoeur.
